Munnar is situated in the Idukki district of Kerala State in India . The word "Munnar" literally means three rivers. The 3 mountain streams namely Madurapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala join together here. Throughout the British rule in India , Munnar was the summer resort of the Government officials. The innate splendor, serenity and mild cold climate all over the year make it the much loved tourist place of both Indians and foreigners.

There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar, majority of which are owned by the Tata and Kannan Devan Group. The tea estates, mounts, lakes and woodlands inside Munnar range represent its exquisiteness. The tea plantations covering the Munnar hills give us the feeling of seeing a endless green carpet.
The locals here speak Malayalam and Tamil and English. The easy route to reach Munnar is from Ernakulam which is about 135km and about 4 hours drive. The Aluva-Munnar road extends through Perumbavoor, Adimali. and Kothamangalam. Bus services are available to Ernakulam (135km), Thekkady (100km), Thiruvananthapuram (300km), Palani (120km) and Coimbatore (150km) from Munnar.

Tourist Places In Munnar
 
Devikulam

Is 7 Km away tourists are attracted to this lake town. Devikulam is an exotic experience among striking flora and fauna and chilly mountain breeze- A pleasant hill station at that. The Sita Devi Lake sited here is a perfect picnic spot with its pictorial surrounds, mineral water, and fishing conveniences.It is an idyllic hill station and the most sought-after among the tourist attractions of Munnar featuring sprawling lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cold mountain air. You will also find Sita Devi Lake with its mineral rich water and charming ambiance and is an ideal picnic spot. This place is ideal for trout fishing.

 
Mattupetty Lake

Situated at the height of 1700 Mtr above sea level, Madupetty is located at 12 Km away from Munnar on the way to Top Station. The grass mounts of the Indo-Swiss Project, a great variety of trees and plants are eye catching sights. Even, during day time, elephants roaming through the thick Eucalyptus trees. The Madupetty Lake spread over 8 Kms. The District Tourism Promotion Council, Idukki District, has made arrangement for boating in this lake. Many varieties of boats are available for boating like speed boat, rover boat, big slow boat etc. The Madupetty lake and dam is a very beautiful picnic spot. Madupetty is a place nobody missed to visit while on a trip to Munnar.

 
Thattekad Bird Sanctuary
The sanctuary lies near Kothamangalam and is 80 km from Munnar. Also known as the Dr.Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (after India's most famous ornithologist, who was instumental in its establishment). Thattekad spreads out over a relatively small area of 25 sq km of dense forest of rosewood, teak and mahogany. But don't let the diminutive size of the sanctuary put you off; this modest bit of land harbours a fairly impressive selection of avifauna, guaranteed to have any avid bird-watchery yearning for more. Thattekad's resident species number more than 270.
 
Rajamalai

Eravikulam National Park - Rajamalai - the second prominent National Park in Kerala, is situated at 12 K m away from Munnar on the way to Marayoor. The park which covers an area of 97 sq-km of rolling grass land and rocky peaks, is breathtakingly beautiful and akin to the Alps. The park is originally meant to protect one of the rare species, Nilgiri Tahr. As per world report only 2000 Tahrs are alive on the earth in which 1000 Tahrs in this park. The local name for the Tahr is "Varai aadu". Another attraction of this park is Neelakurinji, one of the rarest flower on the earth known for its beauty and medicine importance. The Neelakurinji bloom only once in 12 years. The flowering season lasts for about one month. The whole area baths in the violet of the Kurinji flowers during this season.
